How many..??

I  had a funny moment today. One of my old neighbours popped round to see me as he had got wind that I will be starting work.
He put it to me that he would like to become my housekeeper.
He is familiar with the general mess that I live amongst and thinks that as I won't be around much then it will all be too much for me.

Now he had briefly mentioned this to me before in passing prior to me being offered the job, and as time has gone on I thought that having a man around the house every so often to spring clean or cut the grass would be useful, after all he had done a spot of painting for me before. So I thought that it would probably be the way forward, as he could pop in when he wanted and it would be mutual either side.

So when he turned up on my doorstep today I said, "Okay then, how much will you want me to pay you?" and he said , "Oh err, say £5 an hour" Ordinarily I'd have bitten his hand off as that is a bargain, but he's a friend, so I didn't want to pay him less than the minimum wage....so I said I'd give him £6 an hour!!

So I'm thinking, 'that's manageable, say a couple if hours cleaning a week'
And then Dave said "yes I thought I'd do a couple of hours a day, all your ironing, cleaning, tidying, bit of gardening if you need it"
Say what? 10 hours a week? Do people clean for 10 hours a week? I guess good housewives do.
But what will he be doing in those 10 hours...or will he just be slow at doing it all because he's a man!!?

Anyway, in the end we have agreed that he can come and we will see how long it takes him and whether 10 hours is a lot (I expressed my shock! but he even said he'd cook us some meals!!)

So, I think I may be getting myself a butler at a bargain, but I wonder whether he will be able to stick it out for the duration. I suspect that just as I get used to him, he will give it up, I know I would!

A butler! Blimey. Will he wear a uniform too? Perhaps you could ditch the childminder and he could do the lot? !
Sounds like a useful chap, will save your DH having to do any man jobs too!

Sounds like a brilliant idea - wish I had a neighbour who would butler for me!

I had a butler. He was f**king useless about the house! Clumsy too. He wasn't that good in the bedroom either - never did understand that clean sheets on the bed really did turn me on LOL. I guess marrying him was a stupid thing to do.

A butler at a bargain price... sounds an excellent idea. As SNOB says- get him a uniform, he needs to have one!
